Carolingian Binding Model, Type I - 8th to 12th century
Cutaway model of Carolingian attachment type I characteristic for bindings from Reichenau, St Gall and Salzburg. Quarter sawn oak boards are attached to the text block by linen sewing supports that are laced through the board edges and 80 degree V-shape channels. The text block is herringbone sewn and trimmed flushed with the board edges with a knife. Top headband is constructed with supported herringbone sewing and bottom endband with unsupported link stitch sewing.
